Ontario government announces new consumer protection reforms impacting door-to-door water heater sales

Apr 11th, 2013 5:36 AM

Interview Opportunity WHO: Michael Lio, Executive Director of the Homeowner Protection Centre is available to respond to the proposed New Consumer Protection Reforms announced earlier today by the Ontario government. Mr. Lio can speak to the proposed legislation in the context of the deceptive and dishonest door-to-door water tank rental sales practices used by some companies. Michael Lio is the founder of the Homeowner Protection Centre and has represented consumers for almost 25 years on numerous boards, councils and committees. WHAT: In March 2013, the Homeowner Protection Centre released a report with a series of recommendations related to consumer protection issues and domestic hot water tanks. Much of the report focuses on the distinct market in Ontario, where 6 of 10 homeowners rent the units. Mr. Lio can speak to how consumers often lack details of their water tank rental agreement or contract, leaving them unprepared to make choices, for example when approached by door-to-door salespeople pitching new rental contracts. He is able to explain the dishonest practices used by some door-to door water heater rental salespeople and how the new legislation (when passed) should better protect consumers. Mr. Lio is encouraging MPPs from all Parties to support quick passage of the legislation - because without quick passage of the Bill, Ontario consumers remain poorly protected.
