Calling for full EA of Duffin Creek WPCP Outfall
The Town of Ajax is looking forward to working with the Wynne government and Ajax-Pickering MPP Joe Dickson to clean up the excessive algae on the Ajax Waterfront, and require the Regions of Durham and York to undertake a full Environmental Assessment of the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP). MPP Dickson was an early supporter of PACT POW’s (Pickering Ajax Citizens Together to Protect Our Water) Stop the Algae Pledge and was pivotal in securing a meeting between PACT POW and Premier Wynne during the recent election campaign. At the meeting, Ms. Wynne committed to taking on the issue. “The residents of Ajax made it clear during the election campaign that cleaning up the Ajax Waterfront is a priority. I want to thank PACT POW for their tireless efforts to raise awareness and the profile of this important water quality issue during the campaign, and to all candidates for supporting the pledge,” said Mayor Parish. “Ajax Council is committed to working with the newly elected provincial government to require the Regions of York and Durham to conduct a full Environmental Assessment of the plant.” The treated sewage flowing from the plant into Lake Ontario contains large amounts of phosphorous which results in massive volumes of algae being produced and deposited on the Ajax waterfront. MPP Joe Dickson signed the following pledge: “I, Joe Dickson, candidate for MPP in the riding of Ajax-Pickering, pledge that a Liberal government will require the Regions of Durham and York to undertake a full Environmental Assessment of the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant and implement the best method of stopping the release of phosphorus that feeds algae growth along the Ajax Waterfront by 2017.”
