Net Zero Energy home building technology Technical Briefing Session

Jun 24th, 2013 8:47 AM

Media Advisory Where: Owens Corning Canada 3450 McNicoll Avenue, Scarborough, Ontario M1V 1Z5 When: 10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. June 27th, 2013 What: Technical Briefing on National Net Zero Energy program - meet the trainers and builders from across Canada. The briefing will provide journalists with insights into Net Zero Energy (NZE) home building technology and the motivation of the selected builders. A NZE home employs enhanced energy efficiency design strategies to cost effectively reduce energy needs, while supplementing with renewable energy technologies. The result is that the building consumes equal to or less energy than it produces on an annual basis. Who: Representatives of Owens Corning Canada and the five homebuilding companies. Why you should attend: The Technical Briefing will cover net zero building techniques and how the Owens Corning Canada program will lead to cost effective high performance houses for new home buyers. There will be ample time for photographs and interviews. There is also an opportunity for a 30-minute plant tour to demonstrate the insulation manufacturing process. Background: Over $4 million in funding and in-kind contributions from the ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative (ecoEII) and the building industry will allow for the construction of at least 25 net-zero energy homes in 4 provinces. ecoEII will be providing $1.96 million in funding for professional services required for the planning , design and construction of the houses. The remaining funds will come from Owens Corning Canada, builders and the building industry in the form of in-kind contributions to fund the construction of the homes. The five builders are: Construction Voyer (Laval, Quebec); Mattamy Homes Limited (Calgary, Alberta); Minto Communities (Ottawa, Ontario); Provident Development Inc. (Halifax, Nova Scotia); and Reid’s Heritage Homes (Guelph, Ontario). This technical briefing is coincident with a NZE training session being held at the Owens Corning Canada facility. The Owens Corning Canada initiative is designed to develop and advance building techniques that will allow “production” home builders to deliver the benefits of the net zero approach to new home buyers at a positive price point. To date in Canada, there have been very few demonstrations of NZE housing on a community scale that are market-ready for production builder adoption.
