City of Hamilton to be Honoured by Ontario's Chief Energy Conservation Officer

Media Advisory Attention News/Assignment/Energy Editors - Photo Opportunity City of Hamilton to be honoured by Ontario's Chief Energy Conservation Officer for leadership in energy conservation Citizens make changes that save money and reduce environmental impact (Hamilton, Ontario) Ontario's Chief Energy Conservation Officer Peter Love will present Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger with a Certificate of Recognition for the city's first place finish in the Volunteer Blackout Day Challenge* 2007. On August 14th, 2007, Hamilton successfully reduced energy consumption by 2.2 per cent (104,737 kWh) and peak demand by 3.2 per cent between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. According to Horizon Utilities who compiled the results, the reduction is equivalent to 6,000 homeowners turning off their air conditioners for eight hours, or taking 4,000 homes off the grid. The Voluntary Blackout Day program acknowledges the massive Blackout that occurred on August 14, 2003. VBDC urges Ontario municipalities to reduce consumption by 4 per cent on the anniversary of the 2003 blackout. This was the first year Hamilton formally participated.
