Interview Opportunity Fall bird migration and declining bird species in Ontario Loons, waterfowl and birds of prey (hawks, merlins and eagles) are migrating now Who: Gregor Beck is a wildlife biologist and co-editor of the new Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario (www.birdsontario.org). What: Mr. Beck will be available to discuss the following points: • Which species will be most visible during fall migration and where • Which species are most common to Ontario • Differences between spring migration and fall migration • Findings of Ontario Nature’s Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario, including which species are in decline and why Fast Facts on Ontario’s fall bird migration • Fall migration is larger than spring migration. It includes tens of millions of adult birds and their young born this year. • Some of Ontario’s most common bird species migrate in October and early November. • Ontario is home to roughly 300 bird species. • Once common species like the purple martin, a type of swallow, have declined by 46%.
