Interview Opportunity: How a greener building code could combat climate change

Mar 17th, 2008 6:05 AM

Interview Opportunity Attention News/Assignment/Energy/Environment Editors and Reporters How a greener building code could combat climate change (Ottawa, ON – March 17, 2008) The Commission for Environmental Cooperation has issued a report that identifies a tougher, more eco-friendly building code as the most effective way for North America to curb its energy consumption, and cut greenhouse gas emissions. The Commission found that buildings account for one-fifth of all energy consumption in Canada, and 40 per cent in the United States. Buildings are also responsible for 35 per cent of North America's greenhouse gas emissions. Adding reasonable green measures to the building code could cut consumption and emissions by one-third. Stephen Koch, Executive Director of the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA), is available to comment on the report, and its findings. Mr. Koch was a participant and speaker at the Eleventh Conference of the Parties to the UNFCC in Montreal in 2005. He has also been a member of many provincial energy efficiency task groups, is a founding partner of REEEP in Canada (The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership), and sits on numerous boards focusing on energy efficiency. WHO: Stephen Koch, Executive Director, NAIMA Canada WHAT: Mr. Koch is available for media interviews. Among the topics he can discuss are: • The report issued by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation, and what it could mean for the Canadian building industry. • How the Canadian building industry is addressing environmental concerns. • How NAIMA Canada is promoting energy efficient building. • The federal-provincial relationship on Building Codes. • How consumers are reacting to balancing the initial cost of a home to the higher cost of energy.
