Proposed waste site casts shadow over Midland’s First Light event

Nov 21st, 2011 8:20 AM

Media Advisory WHAT: First Light, one of Midland’s signature tourism events, will have a shadow cast over it this year because an outdoor waste transfer and processing site may soon be located at its doorstep. The proposal, by Recycling Specialties Inc., is before Midland Town Council for site plan approval on December 7th. First Light is an annual festival held at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, part of Huronia Historical Parks. Sainte-Marie and the Martyrs’ Shrine are located directly across from the proposed waste transfer and processing site. These two sites are the largest tourist attractions in the area, bringing in 180,000 visitors annually and employing 127 people throughout the year. The noise and visual impact of the proposed waste site would spoil the peace and beauty of these heritage and religious sites. At First Light this year, the Jesuits of English Canada and the Martyrs’ Shrine will have an information booth about the proposed waste site. Available at the booth will be letters of concern for interested parties to sign. All the letters will be delivered by a group marching from the Martyrs’ Shrine and the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre to Midland Town Hall at Noon on November 30th , which marks the last day the Town receives public letters on the proposal.
