Interview Opportunity What: GreenSaver supports the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario’s observations on the Home Energy Savings Plan and the potential for saving homeowners money on their energy bills. Who: Vladan Veljovic, President & CEO, GreenSaver Background: As a not-for-profit energy efficiency organization, GreenSaver, applauds the insightful comments made today by Ontario’s Environmental Commissioner, Gord Miller, regarding the Home Energy Savings Plan. These comments can be found in Section 4.4 of his report, Rethinking Energy Conservation in Ontario – Results (for full text go to http://www.eco.on.ca). GreenSaver believes that these recommendations are not only good for the environment and energy efficiency, but would also protect consumers in Ontario by lowering the need for future power generation infrastructure and creating jobs in the province. “The ECO believes that some form of home energy retrofit program should continue to be offered in Ontario.” (pg 46 Re-thinking Energy Conservation in Ontario – Results - Annual Energy Conservation Progress Report –2009 (Volume 2)) “The ECO urges the ministry to assist third parties to scale up the program by enacting supportive policies, for example, passing a regulation to reguire the Green Energy Act, 2009 provision for manadatory energy ratings at time-of-sale of a property. This would equip some 213,000 resale homes annually with information to undertake a retrofit, and is the sort of value added policy support that government should provide to build capacity and assist market transformation to a high efficiency residential sector.” (pg 47 Re-thinking Energy Conservation in Ontario – Results - Annual Energy Conservation Progress Report –2009 (Volume 2)) GreenSaver is dedicated to environmental energy efficiency through energy assessments, insulation solutions, new technologies like solar and delivering province-wide energy conservation programs. GreenSaver has completed over 43,000 audits in Ontario. They have pioneered Ontario’s residential energy conservation approach for 25 years with economically viable and environmentally friendly advice and solutions to help individuals and organizations (www.greensaver.org). An energy efficient home not only helps homeowners save money and energy, but also helps improve the comfort of their homes and contributes to protecting the environment. The work done on energy efficiency improvements creates local jobs in Ontario and contributes to the economic prosperity of everyone. Knowing the energy rating of a home ensures protection for Ontario consumers when purchasing their most important asset.
