Haiti receives solar technology from GreenSaver

Haiti receives solar technology from GreenSaver (Thursday, January 28, 2010) Haiti’s humanitarian crisis had dominated media coverage for the past two weeks. The scale of the devastation is overwhelming, even from half a world away. Canadians have been very generous, donating as much money, time and resources as they can, and GreenSaver is eager to do its part. For the month of February, $10 from every ecoEnergy D assessment booked with GreenSaver will go directly into a fund for victims of the earthquake. This money will be used to help rebuild the electrical infrastructure that was destroyed. “This is important,” said Vladan Veljovic, President and CEO of GreenSaver. “Electricity is so essential, and solar energy is something that GreenSaver can provide. Having adequate lighting is not only an infrastructure problem, but also one of public safety in this difficult time for the Caribbean nation.” In recent years, Haiti has been challenged by an inadequate power supply and infrastructure. Diesel generators require scarce and imported fuel. This speaks to the benefits of decentralized power sources such as solar installations. GreenSaver will supply self-contained, solar powered street lights, which will illuminate community centres, schools, hospitals and adjacent neighbourhoods, enabling continued rescue and rebuilding efforts at night, and enhancing public safety. GreenSaver has partnered with an organization that already has installation crews in Port-au-Prince, ensuring that the infrastructure will be deployed in a timely fashion. Given the current need, ten solar street lights – valued at over $ 12,000 – will be deployed immediately. Additional equipment, based on funds collected over the next month, will follow. “I can’t think of a more fitting way to make a lasting contribution, than to leverage our expertise in energy efficiency and solar power” Veljovic adds. “Hopefully, our modest efforts will be one step towards rebuilding Haiti.” For more information, or to book an energy audit, please contact: Tracy Chong, 416.203.3106 ext. 229 (office), 416.416.797.7210 (cell) tracy.chong(at)greensaver.org GreenSaver is an independent non-profit corporation dedicated to environmental energy efficiency.
