Media Release Ontario Ministry of Energy and GreenSaver welcome 200th applicant to MEER Program Ottawa building gets $36,800 in energy efficiency rebates (Ottawa, Wednesday June 16, 2010) GreenSaver is excited to announce the 200th applicant to its Multifamily Energy Efficiency Rebates (MEER) initiative: Queen Elizabeth Towers owned and managed by Carleton Condominium Corporation. The building, located at 530 Laurier Avenue West in Ottawa, performed a chiller upgrade for $36,800 in rebates from the program. MPP Phil McNeely, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, as well as representatives from Hydro Ottawa and GreenSaver presented the building's rebate cheque, congratulating them for their efforts and involvement in the program. The building will soon conduct a second retrofit and install energy efficient lighting for further energy savings and incentives. "These upgrades will have a real impact on the building's energy bills," explains McNeely. "GreenSaver and our government are committed to fighting climate change and reducing Ontarians' energy consumption, and this just goes to show that, by helping building owners to make needed retrofits, the MEER program is playing a vital role in achieving those goals." MEER, which is being funded by the Ontario Power Authority, is providing over $30 million in energy efficiency upgrade incentives to building owners across Ontario in order to help them reduce their building's energy consumption. Rebates are available to upgrade lighting, heating, air conditioning, cladding, windows and to offset the cost of energy audits. Apartment buildings, co-ops, shelters, condominiums and other residential dwellings with six or more units are eligible to apply. "We are very proud of the program's success thus far," said Vladan Veljovic, President of GreenSaver. "The program is playing a significant role in helping Ontario achieve its conservation goals, and it has also allowed us to create new green jobs across the province as well." MEER aims to reduce the province's energy consumption by an estimated 60MW. GreenSaver is responsible for delivering the program throughout Ontario, together with its local utility partners, with the exception of buildings within the 416 area code which are handled by the City of Toronto's Better Buildings Partnership. In Ottawa, GreenSaver partners with Hydro Ottawa in delivering the program. The Multifamily Energy Efficiency Rebates initiative is available until December 31, 2010.
