Glen Murray brings to the Ontario Liberal Party leadership race a lifetime of public service -- as an Ontario MPP and Cabinet Minister, former mayor of Winnipeg, and as an activist in sustainable development, urban affairs, community health and human rights. He was elected as Ontario Liberal MPP for Toronto Centre in 2010 and re-elected in 2011. Glen has served as the Ontario Liberal government’s Minister of Research and Innovation and Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. Glen was Mayor of Winnipeg from 1998 to 2004, during which time the city hosted the Pan American Games. From 1989 until his election as mayor he served as a Winnipeg city councillor. He ran for federal office in 2004 as a candidate for the Liberal Party of Canada. As a public servant Glen has been known for his innovative, thought-provoking ideas and ability to work across party lines to get things done. In addition to his political career, he was Chair of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy and President and CEO of the Canadian Urban Institute. Glen has a long history of active participation in human rights and social activism. He was a member of the Toronto Gay Patrol in 1983, the Co-Chair of Canadians for Equal Marriage and he is a founding member of the Canadian AIDS Society. He was also part of the World Health AIDS Service Organization’s working group for the Global Program on AIDS. In 1992, the National Film Board produced a documentary, A Kind of Family, following the relationship of Glen in helping his foster son Curtis, an HIV-positive youth. Glen lives in Toronto with his partner of 17 years, Rick Neves, a neurosurgery nurse.
