Statement for immediate release
GLEN MURRAY OPPOSES DOWNTOWN TORONTO CASINO
TORONTO - November 16, 2012 - Glen Murray, Toronto Centre MPP and candidate for Ontario Liberal Leader, issued the following statement today regarding the possible location of a downtown Toronto casino. “A casino on Toronto’s waterfront or in the central business district would inhibit, not help, the economy of downtown Toronto. While I support the right of Toronto City Council to decide on this issue, I support the position taken by the coalition of businesses, residents, cultural and community groups known as ‘No Casino Toronto’. The waterfront and central business district are the wrong places for a casino. My experience as a big city mayor has shown me that real economic development which focuses on investments that build a strong tax base are better and more sustainable. As Premier, I would not support additional provincial funding for the infrastructure that would be necessary to support a Toronto waterfront or downtown casino. As Toronto Centre MPP, I have a responsibility to my constituents to support what’s best for our riding and our city. Toronto is Canada's economic and cultural capital - and Ontario’s capital, and I will always aspire to support development that expresses Toronto’s greatness.”

Liberal Leadership Candidate Supports “No Casino Toronto” Coalition View
TORONTO (November 16, 2012) - An Ontario Liberal government under Premier Glen Murray would neither support nor pay for a casino in downtown Toronto, the leadership candidate said today. "While I support the right of Toronto City Council to decide on this issue, I support the position taken by the coalition of businesses, residents, cultural and community groups known as 'No Casino Toronto'," said Murray, who is also Liberal MPP for Toronto Centre. "A casino on Toronto's waterfront or in the central business district would inhibit, not help, the economy of downtown Toronto." Murray, who was mayor of Winnipeg and head of the Canadian Urban Institute, said his experience has shown him that "real economic development which focuses on investments that build a strong tax base are better and more sustainable." As Premier, "I would not support additional provincial funding for the infrastructure that would be necessary to support a Toronto waterfront or downtown casino. As Toronto Centre MPP, I have a responsibility to my constituents to support what's best for our riding and our city." Murray's leadership campaign is built on five main ideas for renewal for Ontario families and our economy: • Tax cuts for the middle class and small business • No-money-down university or college tuition • Cities and towns that work • Government that listens • Smart government.
