Media Advisory-Get Out Migration Update for Saturday May 8th
Victoria - The End of the Line for Wild Salmon?
First Nations, fishermen, wilderness tourism businesses, schoolchildren, coastal communities, MLAs and MPs are all walking beside Alexandra Morton into Victoria today for the final leg of the 480 km Get Out Migration.
The final 30km of Salmon Are Sacred's migration for wild salmon starts at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre in Sidney at 8am with everyone welcome to gather from 7.30am. A horse and carriage with a brass marching band and entertainment will encourage the walkers down Route 17 to Victoria. A bus will ferry people from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal to the walkers.
At 12.30pm there will be refreshments served for weary walkers at the constituency office (4085 Quadra Street) of Lana Popham MLA and a meeting point for the final 8km walk into Victoria.
Events in Centennial Square will start at 2pm with speakers, singers and musical entertainment. At 3.30pm the migration will walk together with a marching band for the final 1km to the B.C. Legislature for a rally led by Mia - a 26ft sockeye salmon. Speakers include Grand Chief Stewart Phillip of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, Fin Donnelly MP, Denise Savoie MP, Dr. John Volpe, Rafe Mair, Chief Bob Chamberlin and Grade 10 student Thea Block.
The ranks of the Get Out Migration will be swelled by boats, kayaks and canoes in the Inner Harbor including members of the Paddle for Wild Salmon who paddled down the Fraser River and crossed the Georgia Strait yesterday (May 8).
