Barrie, Ont. (September 26, 2024) – To bring the Greenbelt Foundation’s goal of one million new trees planted in the Greenbelt one step closer to reality, the Greenbelt Foundation and Forests Ontario are working together to plant 250,000 trees in 2025, bringing the total number of trees planted through this collaboration to 750,000 since 2022.
“Through this partnership, the Foundation’s 1 Million Trees in the Greenbelt program has already planted 500,000 trees on public and private Greenbelt lands,” Edward McDonnell, CEO of the Greenbelt Foundation, says. “We are excited to get another 250,000 in the ground in 2025, bringing us one step closer to our goal. These trees will protect our freshwater systems, enhance biodiversity by preserving habitats for native species, mitigate climate impacts such as flooding, and provide valuable green space for communities.”
Some of the goals of the project are to increase tree cover using native species and improve the health and resilience of the Greenbelt’s natural heritage systems by engaging with regional and community planting partners, stewardship groups, forestry consultants, and First Nations, to get more trees in the ground and ensure they grow into healthy forests.
“At Forests Ontario, we envision a world with diverse, resilient, thriving forests today and for future generations – and it is a joy to work with partner organizations like Greenbelt Foundation who share that view and want to conserve, improve, and enhance forest health,” Jess Kaknevicius, CEO of Forests Ontario, says. “With the help of our trusted seed collectors, nurseries, technical advisors, and planting partners, we can help the Greenbelt continue to thrive.”
Municipalities, communities, and corporate or private landowners in the Greenbelt who have the space for large reforestation efforts are encouraged to visit www.greenbelt.ca/maps to determine if they fall within the Greenbelt’s boundaries for this project and apply. Any private landowner in Ontario who is interested in large-scale (500+ trees) tree planting can also learn more and apply for project funding support through Forests Ontario at www.forestsontario.ca/50MTP.
