NOT-FOR-PROFIT ART CENTRE SCORES HOCKEY STICK CHAIR McKaskell Haindl donates one-of-a-kind hockey stick chair to Creative Spirit annual fund-raising auction TORONTO, January 22, 2008 Creative Spirit Art Centre has announced that boutique cabinetry designer McKaskell Haindl, has generously donated a unique chair made of entirely of hockey sticks for its annual fundraiser. Sports fans and collectors will be able to place competing bids on the Hockey Stick Chair during Creative Spirit’s annual fundraising auction event, Straight From the Heart, which runs from February 1st- 13th 2008. Straight from the Heart is a rare event in Toronto’s art scene, combining as it does the work of Creative Spirit artists with emerging artists and established artists including Cape Dorset’s famous sculptors in a single showing. The Cape Dorset sculptures include Inuit snow goggles, fashioned from soapstone and an Inuit fishing jig. Collectors and art lovers can bid on any of the work on display including work by artists now rarely seen in exhibition. In addition to the McKaskell Haindl Hockey Stick Chair and the Cape Dorset sculptures, Straight from the Heart will auction works by Mendelson Joe, Robert J. Anderson, Barry Woo, Jan Swinburne, Barbara Klunder, Kristine Erglis, Martin Owen, Hanni Sager, Gabe Anderson, Doug Gilford, Lee L'Clerc, Julie Voyce, Fastwürms, Meiko Ando, Jamasie Pitseolak, Johnnylee Pudlat, Lynne McIlvride Evans, Shelley Fowler and many others. Theatre tickets and restaurant meals will also be auctioned. The money raised supports Creative Spirit’s work as a public art gallery/studio for artists with schizophrenia, mental retardation, physical, mental and emotional disabilities. “There’s something tremendous about the idea of artists helping artists,” says Ellen Anderson, Creative Spirit’s Executive Director. “As inspiring as the art is the support we receive from artists in Toronto, London and as far away as Cape Dorset.” About Creative Spirit Art Centre: Since 1992, Creative Spirit Art Centre has proudly collected and exhibited art created by artists with schizophrenia, mental retardation, physical, mental and emotional disabilities as well as work by emerging artists and Art Brut. Creative Spirit Art Centre is an affiliate of Very Special Arts International. Both organizations are dedicated to “advancing the creative power in people with disabilities.” Creative Spirit Art Centre is a Registered Charity with Revenue Canada and is a non-profit Corporation with a Board of Directors.
