Environmental Commissioner to visit Niagara-on-the-Lake (Toronto, ON, June 22, 2010) The Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, Gord Miller, will visit a local piece of one of Canada's most unique biodiversity spots this week. He is in Niagara with his multi-stakeholder advisory committee but they will take time out from business meetings for visits to environmental features and initiatives in the region, including a private tour of Marcy's Woods, a protected private nature reserve comprising 285 acres of intact Carolinian forest. "Carolinian forest is a unique ecosystem of Southwestern Ontario of which not much remains for us to see," Mr Miller noted. "In this International Year of Biodiversity, it is especially encouraging to see examples of intact biodiversity such as this." "Our family is proud that Ontario's Environment Commissioner has come to visit Marcy's Woods to witness first-hand the success we have had in ensuring the Carolinian forest, sensitive wetlands, sand dunes, flora and fauna contained in our private nature preserve are not only properly protected, restored and managed but also enjoyed by nature lovers for generations to come," said property owner Dino A. DiCienzo. Each year, Mr Miller meets his committee in different regions around the province to discuss business and to experience some local spots of environmental interest. Past destinations have included Fort Francis, Sarnia, Sudbury and Cornwall. This year, along with Marcy's Woods, they will visit some of the region's many environmentally significant features and initiatives, including a tour of the environmentally sustainable viticulture practices at Flatrock Cellars; a tour of Balls Falls Conservation Area; and a tour of a project by Walker Environmental Industries that generates renewable energy from landfill gas to power a nearby recycling plant. The Commissioner will be available for interviews at the Hilton Garden Inn, Niagara-on-the-Lake, or by phone, at the following times: Tuesday, June 22nd 4:30-5:30pm Wednesday, June 23rd 1 - 2:00pm To arrange an interview, please contact: Hayley Easto (416) 325-3371 hayley.easto@eco.on.ca
