Ontario's first and largest geothermal energy-efficient community unveiled (Kincardine, January 26, 2008) Today, Huron-Kinloss Mayor, Mitch Twolan joined with representatives from Reid’s Heritage Homes and EnerQuality Corporation to celebrate the opening of Ontario’s first energy-efficient geothermal community in Kincardine. “We are extremely excited as we take yet another step towards developing affordable, sustainable and healthy communities," said Ron Salisbury, Manager of Home Performance Programs for Reid’s Heritage Homes. The homes at Inverlyn Lake Estates are the first in the province to make the STREAM™geoexchange system standard on all base model homes. The STREAM system uses the energy of the earth to transfer renewable heat to the home from a heat pump instead of generating it through combustion. Geoexchange systems have been used safely in Europe for 50 years, and in the United States for 30 years, harnessing the relatively constant temperatures found beneath the earth’s surface. The system works by pumping heat into the home in the winter and out in the summer. Homeowners are able to achieve energy savings of 60% or more compared to a typical gas or electric system. This translates into significantly smaller heating and cooling bills. “We are thrilled that Reid’s Heritage Homes, a recipient of our recent Building Innovation and Excellence Award, is offering ENERGY STAR qualified homes, but also going above and beyond with their geo-thermal initiative,” said Corey McBurney, Managing Director of EnerQuality. “Once again, they have demonstrated leadership and provided homebuyers with a new way to improve their energy efficiency.” For more details or to arrange an interview, please contact: Rebecca Mountain, Manager, Lifestyle Initiatives, (519) 658-6656, ext. 247, rmountain@heritagehomes.com Jonathan Laderoute, e|c|o, (416) 972-7401, laderoutej(a)huffstrategy.com ENERGY STAR for New Homes is a label given to homes that meet balanced, whole-house energy-efficiency standards, guaranteeing their owners significant energy savings. New homes that receive the ENERGY STAR label are approximately 30 percent more energy efficient than those built to the minimum Ontario building code standards. The ENERGY STAR mark, used with permission, is administered and promoted in Canada by Natural Resources Canada Reid's Heritage Homes is one of the premier builders in Southwestern Ontario. They were the first home builder in the Tri-Cities region to release ENERGY STAR as a standard feature in select communities. ENERGY STAR is standard in all single detached homes in Guelph, Kitchener, Cambridge, London, and Collingwood and in select homes in Port Elgin.
