Londoners tour energy efficient homes during the ENERGY STAR® for New Homes London Home Tour
Oct 16th, 2006 10:34 AM
Tour continues on Saturday, October 21st
(London, ON, October 14, 2006) Today, hundreds of Londoners toured the city’s newest energy efficient homes during the London Home Tour (sponsored by Owens Corning), which will continue on Saturday, October 21st. The four home builders participating in the tour, Palumbo Homes, Rawlings Homes, Reid’s Heritage Homes, and Z Group, are showing how their energy efficient homes can save money and help the environment.
Lois Langdon of the London Home Builder’s Association, who helped coordinate the tour, says that, “Home builders in London are responding quickly to concerns about volatile energy prices and climate change by offering energy efficient homes.”
All of the 7 homes on the tour, located across London, are ENERGY STAR qualified, translating into 30 to 40 percent more energy efficiency than homes built to the minimum Ontario Building Code and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3 tonnes a year for each house.
“Builders are choosing to participate in the ENERGY STAR for New Homes program because the ENERGY STAR label guarantees that home buyers will receive real energy efficiency,” explains Corey McBurney, Managing Director of EnerQuality Corporation, the organization which oversees the ENERGY STAR for New Homes program in Ontario. “Each ENERGY STAR qualified home is performance tested by a third-party Certified Energy Evaluator to verify that the house meets stringent energy saving technical specifications.”
Typical energy saving measures in an ENERGY STAR qualified home include higher levels of insulation in basements, walls and attics, ENERGY STAR qualified windows and doors, tighter building envelopes, programmable thermostats, sealed ducts, ENERGY STAR qualified appliances, and high-efficiency heating, hot water and air conditioning systems.
“Home energy efficiency is not a trend,” says McBurney. “It’s an advancement in construction practices that benefit home owners.”
