12th annual Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada 2013 list released

Jun 6th, 2013 7:58 AM

(Toronto, Ontario, June 6th, 2013) Corporate Knights today released its Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada list, the definitive annual ranking of Canada’s top corporate citizens. The ranking, which is in its 12 year, transparently measures a diverse range of Canadian enterprises on a suite of twelve financially relevant sustainability metrics, including greenhouse gas productivity, health & safety performance and pension fund quality. To ensure ‘apples to apples’ comparisons, companies are ranked exclusively against their industry peers, and scored on a 0-100% scale using only those metrics that are widely disclosed in their respective industry. The Best Corporate Citizen for 2013 is the Vancouver City Savings Credit Union, a leading Canadian financial co-operative with over $16 billion in assets under administration. Some of the factors that helped Vancouver City Savings Credit Union earn the top spot were its low CEO-to-average worker pay ratio, formal linkage of executive compensation to the achievement of sustainability-related performance targets and strong gender diversity at the board and senior executive level. The Corporate Knights Best 50 methodology for grading corporate citizenship, developed with financial support from Industry Canada, has helped raise the rigour and professionalism of what it means to be a good corporate citizen. The methodology has been recognized by Rate the Raters as ‘a leading global practice’. “The investment community, both in Canada and abroad, is increasingly demanding clear and standardized information about companies’ sustainability performance,” says Doug Morrow, Corporate Knights’ managing director. This year’s batch of Best 50 corporate citizens stand out as top performers on a suite of forward-looking financially relevant sustainability metrics.” Corporate Knights also examines foreign-based companies with significant operations in Canada in a separate assessment called the Top Foreign Corporate Citizens in Canada. The full methodology and analysis of the Best 50 Corporate Citizens is detailed at http://www.corporateknights.com/best50 and summarized in the Best 50 2013 issue (Vol. 12.2) of Corporate Knights, found in the Globe and Mail tomorrow. The Top Foreign Corporate Citizens in Canada 2013 The Top Foreign Corporate Citizens represent corporations with substantial operations in Canada who are leading the way on corporate citizenship and have their main headquarters in another country. Companies must earn more than $1 billion/year in Canada, and the parent corporations must have qualified for Corporate Knights's 2013 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World shortlist.
