Ontario's Chief Energy Conservation Officer to award Certificates of Recognition to residents of Timmins and Hydro One Zone 6 for Refrigerator Retirement Program

Mar 28th, 2007 9:02 AM

Media Advisory - Attention News and Assignment Editors (Timmins, Ontario) From July to September 2006, residents of the City of Timmins participated in the Ontario Power Authority's "Refrigerator Retirement Program," undertaken by Hydro One Zone 6. In addition to Timmins, pilot projects were run in Barrie, Kingston, Mississauga, St. Catharines, and Windsor. Across the province, 5,235 refrigerators and freezers were collected, decommissioned and recycled. Timmins contributed nearly 200 units to the program. Peter Love, Ontario's Chief Energy Conservation Officer, is recognizing the contribution of Timmins residents and Hydro One Zone 6 staff. The success of this program and the contribution of Timmins residents have resulted in a decision to roll this project out province-wide in 2007. Refrigerators and freezers are among the top energy consumers in the home. Because these appliances have a long lifespan, consumers often replace them without taking the old, energy-inefficient ones out of service. Often, they become secondary appliances in basements and garages. This program seeks to retire older, secondary refrigerators and freezers and recycle them in an environmentally responsible manner.
