Context:

While the Federal Government may have abandoned virtually all meaningful climate action and efforts to reduce climate-impacting fossil fuel emissions, we have not.

The Canada’s Clean50 Awards will, for the 16^th time, on October 15^th recognize the 50 senior leaders doing the most to advance climate action in Canada from across the country, and from every sector, together with 20 Emerging Leaders and 5 Lifetime Contributors.

This year’s list marks a dramatic shift in how climate and environmental leadership is being defined and recognized across Canada.

For the first time in the program's 16-year history, not a single federal or provincial politician made the list. Instead, this year’s list highlights where real climate action is taking place:

Municipal Powerhouses: Municipal leaders are stepping into the void, with three mayors recognized in total (Waterloo, ON, St. John’s, NFLD and a Lifetime Contribution Award for the mayor of Saint-Laurent / Montréal).
Female Representation: for the first time, over 50% of this year’s Clean50 honourees are women (including over 50% of the 16 winners declared to be category leaders), and 13 of 20 Emerging Leaders, and 100% of the winners in four of 16 categories.
Youth Empowerment: In addition to the 20 Emerging Leaders, this year marked the launch of the new "Run Like a Girl" Award, sponsored by former Environment Minister Catherine McKenna, this year recognizing four outstanding young female leaders, including Emily Lowan, leader of the BC Green Party, at age 25.
Clean Energy and Clean / Climate Tech provided a combined 15 of 50 winners
Virtually every company represented on the list identified that, while the government was stepping down – they were actually stepping up their efforts to reduce GHGs.

All 75 leaders with past honourees and other leaders of sustainability initiatives – 170 individuals in all - are meeting for a full day in Toronto on October 15^th to brainstorm ways to advance climate action in the face of various governments retreats.
