Why shouldn’t all Ontarians benefit from $100 million energy retrofit program?

Feb 9th, 2016 10:29 AM

(Lindsay, ON, February 9, 2016) Last Thursday, the Ontario Government announced a new $100 million home energy retrofit program to upgrade furnaces, water heaters and insulation. Media reports today indicated that Kitchener Centre MPP Daiene Vernile (L) confirmed, “Anyone in Ontario who uses natural gas in their homes will be able to take part in a provincial energy retrofit program, even if they are not customers of Enbridge or Union Gas.” The Canadian Oil Heat Association (COHA) is looking forward to learning how heating oil and propane users will be treated by this program. It is important to remember that natural gas lines do not service all Ontarians. High performing, energy efficient water heaters and furnaces powered by fuel-oil are commonly available in Ontario. “It is easy for people living in Ontario’s large urban centres to forget that large parts of Ontario do not have natural gas lines and choose between wood, propane, electricity or fuel oil for heat and hot water,” said Stephen Koch, President COHA. “Residents in many of these areas would benefit greatly from this program as they currently face higher unemployment and lower incomes.”

“Many rural residents in both southern and northern Ontario would welcome more access to energy saving incentive programs like those developed for urban gas consumers.” Koch concluded, “COHA looks forward to working with the Ontario government to ensure programs like the one developed for natural gas users are available to all Ontario homeowners.”
