9th ANNUAL SMOG SUMMIT CONVENES TOMORROW
TAKING ACTION ON CLEAN AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Toronto – The 9th Annual Smog Summit is being held at Toronto City Hall Council Chambers on June 4th, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Summit concludes with the signing of the 2008 Toronto and Region Intergovernmental Declaration on Clean Air which outlines the workplan and targets for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Clean Air Council.
Following the Smog Summit, a Green Development Best Practices Exchange will be held in the Council Chamber from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Experts, government representatives and developers will gather together to highlight green development standards, incentives and practices being implemented in the GTA and beyond.
The Smog Summit is an opportunity for federal, provincial and GTA regional and municipal politicians to announce actions they will undertake in the coming year to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Eva Ligeti, Executive Director of the Clean Air Partnership, says, “Each Smog Summit the Clean Air Partnership encourages political action with measurable results such as reducing energy use in government buildings and fleets, increasing transit ridership, the production and purchasing of green power, increasing the number of green buildings and communities and so on,” and notes, “We have come along way since the first Smog Summit held in 2000. GTA Municipalities are moving forward on many fronts to position their communities as sustainable, clean and green.”
“This annual Summit is supported by the work of the GTA-Clean Air Council member’s work throughout the year to share research and build capacity for clean air and climate change actions that can be more efficiently implemented by municipalities” says Ligeti. Twenty GTA municipalities will be making clean air and climate change announcements at the Smog Summit.
Provincial government Ministers bringing clean air and climate change announcements are John Gerritsen, Minister of the Environment and Jim Bradley, Minister of Transportation.
