Going Green with BOMA BOMA Canada will unveil improved certification program at BOMEX BOMEX 2008, (September 30 to October 2 in Vancouver, BC) will see the unveiling of the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of Canada's new environmental performance standards and certification program. An evolution of BOMA Canada's Go Green and Go Green Plus, this initiative will integrate the two programs and allow for the comparison of performance and management practices between Canadian commercial properties. BOMA anticipates a smooth transition with the implementation of new features including online application and a streamlined online assessment. As part of the certification process, BOMA will continue to use third-party verifiers to perform a site visit to each building that submits an application. There are four possible levels of certification: Level 1: eligible buildings must meet all BOMA Go Green Best Practices. Level 1 demonstrates basic compliance with BOMA's best practices. Level 2: eligible buildings must meet all BOMA Go Green Best Practices, and achieve 70-79% on the Go Green Plus assessment. Managers of these buildings will go through the entire Go Green Plus questionnaire, input 12 months of consumption data, and take advantage of the scoring and benchmarking opportunities. Level 2 demonstrates a move towards excellence in energy and environmental performance through better management, and understanding of what must be done to improve performance. Level 3: eligible buildings must meet all BOMA Go Green Best Practices and achieve 80-89% on the Go Green Plus assessment. Level 3 buildings have usually been managed with energy and environmental performance in mind for several years. Level 4: eligible buildings must meet all BOMA Go Green Best Practices and achieve over 90% on the Go Green Plus assessment. These buildings combine superior environmental management practices with low energy and water consumption. This newly integrated certification program will better serve BOMA's membership in the commercial real estate industry. New assessment criteria are also being developed for shopping centres, industrial and retail strip developments and multi-unit residential properties. Details will be announced during an educational session at BOMEX 2008 in Vancouver.
