Bring Back the Salmon Credit River Tour with Tony Sharley

Port Credit River to host Atlantic salmon reintroduction media tour Port Credit, Streetsville Dam, Norval Dam, Belfountain Conservation Area and Rogers Creek?all important sites for salmon Journalists are invited to join Tony Sharley, the Manager of Australia's Banrock Station, a world-renowned rehabilitated wetland and home to The Wine and Wetlands Centre, on a tour of Atlantic salmon reintroduction sites along the Credit River on Monday, June 4, 2007, beginning at 10 a.m. He will be joined by Chris Robinson of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH). Mr. Sharley and Mr. Robinson will make their way from the mouth of the Credit River and visit sites at the Streetsville dam, Norval dam, Belfountain Conservation Area and Rogers Creek (see itinerary below). Banrock Station Wines, through its Wetlands Foundation Canada, has committed $1.25 million to Bring Back the Salmon. Bring Back the Salmon Tour Itinerary - June 4, 2007 Start - 10 a.m. - Port Credit (53 Lake Street, Mississauga) - Covering off the Port and Lake Ontario with opening remarks and the travelogue as we head to Streetsville. Stop 1 - 10:30 a.m. - Streetsville Dam (Drenkelly Court, Mississauga, end of the road, by the cemetery) - First major barrier on the Credit, used to manage fish passage, and a larger example of what will be done at Norval. Stop 2 - 11:30 a.m. - Norval Dam (Adamson St. North, north of Guelph St., Norval) - A non-functional fishway and a failing dam, one of our larger planned projects; will be used to manage fish passage further upstream. Stop 3a and 3b - 12:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. - Belfountain Community Hatchery and Belfountain Conservation Area - Lunch will be provided (Belfountain Inn - 792 Forks of the Credit Road, Belfountain) - Club hatchery raising Atlantic salmon. An ideal Atlantic salmon habitat, a recovered stone quarry, and an impassable dam built on top of a natural waterfall. Stop 4 - 2:30 p.m. - Rogers Creek Project (Terra Cotta Inn - 175 King St., Terra Cotta) - First of five ponds being taken offline this summer, re-connecting coldwater habitat and removing a heat source both for Roger's Creek and the Credit as a whole. About 200m of new stream will be built and wetlands created.
