For Immediate Release TORONTO, December 5, 2012 - Building Owners and Managers Association of the Greater Toronto Area (BOMA Toronto) has been named the recipient of the 2012 ‘Associations Make a Better Canada’ award by the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE)for the successful development and management of its BOMA Toronto CDM Program. BOMA Toronto stepped up to Ontario’s energy challenge by proposing a unique Conservation and Demand Management (CDM) program that would not only serve its membership but also serve the real-estate industry at large. Funded by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), the BOMA Toronto CDM Program ran from March 2007 to the end of 2010. Together, BOMA Toronto and the OPA developed and managed the CDM Program with great success. This success provided the foundation on which the current province-wide saveONenergy RETROFIT PROGRAM is built, integrating the lessons, strategies and systems from the BOMA CDM Program. BOMA Toronto is the first and only association in Ontario to have delivered a CDM program directly to its end user. Special committees were set up to ensure that the program met its objectives and was in accord with OPA’s governance standards. Experienced conservation consultants and engineers were also brought in to work specifically on the program. While helping to meet provincial energy demand reduction targets, the program sustained an average annual growth of 100% in savings over four years, with its last quarter performance being a record-high 13MW of conservation. By the end of 2010, the BOMA Toronto CDM Program successfully delivered over 50MW of conservation, making it one of the best performing CDM programs ever delivered to the Ontario market. 50MW is equivalent to enough energy to supply over 15,000 homes for one year (based on Statistics Canada). The BOMA Toronto CDM model is simple and effective, achieved substantial sustainable and verifiable electricity conservation, and can easily be replicated in other jurisdictions in Canada. “BOMA Toronto is very proud to have received this award from the CSAE, acknowledging the success of the BOMA Toronto CDM program, and is honoured to be recognized as an association that is making a better Canada. One of BOMA Toronto’s goals is to actively promote energy conservation and sustainability and with the CDM Program we were able to do this with great success,” comments Chris Conway, President and Chief Staff Officer of BOMA Toronto. “The culture of conservation is prevalent across Ontario through the inspiration and engagement of numerous organizations. BOMA was one of the pioneers of OPA's new generation of conservation programs and together we will continue to make a difference,” says Andrew Pride, Vice President Conservation at the Ontario Power Authority. About Ontario Power Authority The Ontario Power Authority is responsible for ensuring a reliable, sustainable supply of electricity for Ontario.
